When Your Card Declines at Therapy So You Post on TikTok
Maybe we’re getting a bit too comfortable on the internet…
Imagine a world where you go to pay right after your therapy appointment, and your card declines. Naturally, your therapist's response would be to bring out the very trauma that brought you to their office to begin with. This is the punchline to a new TikTok trend. The trend is set to a song from the show Adventure Time, although the actual videos have nothing to do with the show. The setup remains the same, “When your card declines at therapy so…” then the poster will add their own spin on the end, adding what traumatized them.
At first glance, the trend is ridiculous and just a joke. However, this trend is just one in a long line of trends that allow users to share their trauma. Now, this isn’t entirely a bad thing, joking about trauma can help heal and most of this trend doesn’t get too deep. However, all it takes is one user to take the joke too far, or TikTok’s algorithm pushes it to the wrong person for it to turn sour. TikTok is a public platform, so while you may be comfortable sharing, doing so can result in someone who isn’t comfortable with it seeing it.
As a whole, Gen Z is more tolerant and accepting of mental health issues. Part of what fosters this is seeing other people live through it, and TikTok can do just that. However, some things shouldn’t be shared publicly, especially when potential employers and colleges can see exactly what you’re doing.
