The Verdict Is In
Reviewing The Beatles New Single
On November 2nd, 2023, the new Beatles single “Now And Then” was released for the world to enjoy. After about a year of anticipation after news broke out of the song being worked on in 2022, the band managed to keep all other news and updates very hush-hush, with no exact release date of the single until mere days before its release. Now that the song is out, I have been able to give it a few listens and am now able to give my official review.
The song overall was produced well and had some very reminiscent Beatles sounds while still trying to make its way into the modern music scene. While that may be enjoyable for some people, I felt like it kept bouncing back and forth between the two, and I felt like as soon as I was getting into it, I was taken right back out. I enjoyed the orchestral aspect of the song and the slide guitar that was laid down in tribute to the late George Harrison.
As bittersweet of an ending, as this song was, I think it's definitely a good ending to the catalog of the band. That being said, something I wish was different in the mix was the clarity of the vocals. I understand they were taken from a demo tape, and the whole point of using this new AI technology was to lift and clean the vocals up for production. In this case, I feel as if they did it too well; I feel like the vocals stick out too much and almost sound a bit fake and generated since it says the line and immediately gets cut off.
Besides that, I think everything else was really nice, and how the two remaining band members got to make a song 43 years after the death of John Lennon. I think what really shines through in this song is that it was less for the audience and more for them as a tribute to the late members and to make one last song with them. As I said before, I think this is a good end for the Beatles Discography, and I'm so thankful I was alive to witness one of the best and most influential bands release a new single.
