Is Sarah J. Maas Worth the Hype?

If you ask any fantasy reader, regardless of how new to the genre they are, if they know what the acronym ‘ACOTAR’ stands for, chances are that they will say yes and proceed to launch into a twenty-five-minute rant about their beloved ‘Feyre Darling’ and the correct way to pronounce ‘Rhys.’ (Personally, I tend to go with Reece.) But what makes A Court of Thorns and Roses such a staple in the fantasy world?
The answer is simple, the author, Sarah J. Maas’s unmatched intellect and how it bleeds onto the page through her worldbuilding skills. She plants seeds of foreshadowing in her stories that readers won’t catch until their second or third re-read. Maas’ series are long but action packed and she spares neither the reader nor her characters’ heartache. She is no stranger to giving her characters very intricate and traumatic backstories.
Despite this, and despite the daunting length of the books, A Court of Thorns and Roses is an easy read and is perfect for anyone who is intimated by the intensity of most fantasy novels. Beginners to the genre will have no trouble following Feyre as she enters the world of the Fae and will find themselves unable to let go of these characters by the end of the series.
