Founded in 2012 by Daniel Katz, David Fenkel, and John Hodge, A24 has created some of the best films in the past 11 years. But what makes an A24 film an A24 film? A24 tries to be its own genre with its use of contemporary visuals, classical techniques, and off-beat narratives. A big difference for A24 is people will go see an A24 movie because it’s an A24 movie. Besides Pixar, this is unique for a studio. The following is a list of what I believe are some of the best A24 movies people should watch. One of these might become your favorite film.
11. The Tragedy of Macbeth, 2021, Directed by Joel Coen
This may not be for everyone, but Joel Coen is one of the best directors ever, and if you appreciate the art of filmmaking, this is probably the best version of the story of Macbeth out there. It demonstrates how the visual aspect of storytelling has a major impact on how the story is understood.
10. Everything Everywhere All at Once, 2022 Directed by Daniel Scheinert, Daniel Kwan
I personally didn’t like this movie, but mostly everyone else who saw it did, so it might be worth it for you to give it a shot.
9. The Disaster Artist, 2017, Directed by James Franco
This is one of the more funny movies A24 has made, with the same style and production quality as others. It tells a true story that I’m sure not many know of.
8. Good Time 2017 Directed by Josh Safdie, Benny Safdie
Intense. This film is anxiety-inducing in the best way possible; you’ll be out of breath by the final scene, which is one of the best there is.
7. Ex Machina 2014, Directed by Alex Garland
Like many A24 films, this is absolutely beautiful to look at. The combination of sci-fi and psychological thriller works perfectly in this director's debut film. This is also one of those pop culture films that people will reference all the time.
6. The Florida Project 2017, Directed by Sean Baker
This is the most accurate portrayal of children in any film I’ve seen. This movie just feels real, something most other films don't have.
5. The Killing of a Sacred Deer 2017, Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos
This screenplay was based on the Greek tragedy Iphigenia in Aulis. A mix of mythical themes in a modern context makes for a classic feel and intriguing plot that will give you many ways to interpret. This is the kind of movie a teacher could assign an essay on.
4. The Lobster 2015, Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos
This movie has a plot that doesn’t go where you’ll think. It’s a great commentary on modern relationships. It’s the kind of movie that you’ll think about for a while.
3. Midsommar 2019, Directed by Ari Aster
Definitely one of the best horror movies ever made. It’s simultaneously beautiful and horrific. This is a movie that will always be remembered for its perfect execution of suspense.
2. The Lighthouse 2019, Directed by Robert Eggers
This is an eye-opener for how good a movie can be. Without the use of color, more than two characters, or a wide aspect ratio, it is captivating and is an icon for A24’s filmography.
1. The Green Knight 2021, Directed by David Lowery
This is in my top four favorite movies. I love this film; everything about it is perfect to me: the pacing, the acting, the costumes, the music, the plot, the cinematography, the symbolism, the character development, and the ending. The Green Knight reveals the beauty of the art of filmmaking and storytelling.
(this list is in a loose order and based on my opinion) I know I left out a lot of movies here, but this list will hopefully inspire people to seek them out on their own.
